The Attempt

“I can see this car in the dark!” Brandon yells over the Top 40 music on the radio blasting in their yellow Honda, “I know!” replies Mary, as Tom turns the rustic music off. “Deal with it!” exclaims Janet, turning the music on again and laughing. The family doesn’t think much of the fog the car passes through, and before they know it, they’re home. “Goodnight!” The twins holler before closing their bedroom doors.
Mary looks at her clock after a few hours; 12:24 AM “Ready?” She asks through the vent that separates the twins’ bedrooms, Brandon glances at his clock, which also reads 12:24 AM. “I’ll make the call now, while you call the amigos,” Brandon says, thinking about the friends they plan to meet, Mary dials the friend groups’ number, 386-574-4732, to confirm the parking lot hangout. 3 feet away, Brandon dials the Daytona Beach Taxi Cab service. “I’d like a cab at Spring Meadows Drive.” After both calls, the twins climb out their windows.
The twins walk to the curb, where a taxi arrives shortly. Brandon opens the door “M’lady,” he says to Mary as she enters the yellow vehicle. “This is almost as yellow as our car!” jokes Brandon, “How long have you done this?” Mary asks the driver to no response. After about what feels like an hour, “Hey, I don’t recognize this road,” Brandon says, peering at the dirt road. “Umm, Brandon,” Mary gasps, “that sign says Bulow Creek State Park!” Brandon stutters, “Sir, this isn’t where we want to go,” after a few minutes the twins grow anxious of their driver, who must be mute, hopefully.
The car stops in the middle of the forest, where an out of place object reflects the car’s lights, but the object is still not viewable. Slowly five figures appear, the kids are forced out of the car and into the spacecraft while yelling, but nobody can hear them. Shaking and still yelling, they push buttons throughout the huge white ship, Brandon pushes a button, and a one minute timer starts on a small display, he sets the time on his watch. They are sat in a room where they discover a hatch, Brandon makes a ten symbol to his twin, meaning at ten seconds, he also shows her his watch, and she nods.
At ten seconds, they make a run for it, sprinting through the hatch, they get as far as they can before the ship explodes! Brandon manages to get behind a fallen log, while Mary is thrusted, luckily having a pile of branches to break her fall. Scraps of metal fly everywhere, some melting into the ground, most small pieces jetting into trees. Brandon and Mary find each other through the harsh brush, where they hide behind a rock while flames reach the sky where the ship used to be.
Panting and gasping, Mary says “It’s not over yet, look,” She points at the aliens rising from the forest floor, “No, no it is not,” Says Brandon. “Hold onto this branch, and keep it on the ground, when the alien comes here, lift it up,” says Mary “Okay,” nods Brandon. Mary walks to the log that protected Brandon, shortly after, the alien walks in front of the tripwire, and the twins lift it up. Thunk! The alien hits the ground, rising quickly, the alien swings at Brandon, “Puh-lease! Like that’ll work!” Mary yells, kicking him as hard as she can, easily knocking him out.
The twins see barrels with fire logos on them, “You thinking what I’m thinking?” Brandon asks, “Oh yeah,” Mary replies excitedly. The kids rush at the aliens pushing two of them far away, and into the barrels. BOOM! The barrels explode, leaving 2 left, Brandon runs to a glimmering piece of metal; he discovers that it’s a laser gun! He fires, but misses the alien, the laser hits a tree and the tree falls on the invasive figure.
“Um, oh,” Brandon says “I didn’t expect that, but whatever” Mary and Brandon gang up on the knock-off human from outer space, punches, kicks, elbows, and knees are employed in this fight, the alien falls unconscious and hits the ground, a nearby ranger station reported the battle minutes ago, and soon flashing lights and sirens come, eventually the twins wake up in their house, exhausted, at breakfast a black suited man tries to tell the twins they were dreaming, but the kids know what happened that night, they would never sneak out again!
